  • Specialized Equipment

My Wish List

  • Pontoon Barge driving modifications.  In summer ‘17 Auntie Ann supplied Alex with a new Pontoon boat to help him recapture the joy of Lake life.  The next step similar to the van will be the modifications necessary for him to drive the boat himself.  Estimate $3,000-$5,000.

  • Adapted bicycle.  Portland is widely know as “Bike Town USA”.  Alex was an avid cyclist and with a new adapted bike he will be able to ride to town from his apartment and enjoy rides around the state with friends and family.  Estimate $5,000-7,000.

  • Swim therapy.  Since Alex returned from the hospital he has enjoyed weekly swim therapy (not covered by insurance).  The results have been amazing with increased strength, flexibility and endurance. $300 monthly.

  • Personal trainer. In addition to his regular regiment of physical and occupation therapy Alex must fill in with exercise to ensure he continues to grow in strength and flexibility.  The personal trainer will be part of his OHSU Wellness membership with access to specialized equipment and excessive therapist.  $300-$500 monthly.

  • Massage therapy.  A much needed therapy not covered by insurance is regular massage with a spinal cord injury massage specialist. $300 monthly.

  • Service dog breeder fee.  The Dorman Family donated the training and procurement of a mobility service dog for Alex ($20,000).  We are now at the phase to acquire a new Labradoodle puppy in February-March for delivery in ~18 months.  $2,500.

  • Annual check-up to Craig Hospital rehab center.  After leaving Mission Hospital Alex spent six months at Craig Hospital in Englewood, CO.  The annual week-long assessments incur airfare, lodging, caregivers and several other non-insurance cover services.  $2,500.

  • Bicep to tricep tendon transfer.  A pending surgery to enable more arm movement and increases in strength have been recommended.  Pending insurance determination of this “elective” surgery will likely require all or a portion requiring private pay.  Estimate $10,000-30,000.

  • FES Bike.  This equipment is a leg and arm exercise apparatus with electo-muscle stimulation.  Today Alex utilizes this equipment as a private pay therapy in the OHSU rehab center.  To enable more consistent access and frequency a personal FES bike could be a real game changer.  $25,000.

  • Adaptive Sports.  Alex is beginning to be strong enough to venture back into sport he loved before the his injury.  Skiing, water skiing and adventures like white water rafting are offered by the Oregon Adaptive Sport Association and other organizations.  Fees and equipment will vary by sport and therapist required.

Needs met

  • Power Wheels.  A big step towards independence was achieved when Alex manual wheelchair was equipped with power-assist wheels.  $8,400

  • Apartment adaptation remodel.  Alex new apartment was rented as ADA compliant, but his needs for a roll-in shower, open vanity, storage, Alexa powered lights and auto-open door lock enhancements have enabled a higher level of independent living.  $13,000

  • Standing frame.  Coupled with insurance funds and donations Alex now has a personal standing frame in his apartment.  This equipment is critical for strength, blood flows and muscle development.  $2,500 (donation)

  • Van modifications and training for Alex driving needs.  The recent Right Now for Alex Agan benefit concert raised funds for this meaningful step forward.  The family purchased the van when he returned home with Alex as a passenger.  In June the modifications and training are expected to be complete!  Estimate $50,000-80,000.
